How We Test & Review Crossbows

Every recommendation on ProCrossbow.com comes from the same five-step process. We keep it honest: this page describes what we actually do today, and we’ll strengthen it as our testing program grows.

1. Spec Verification

Every spec we publish — speed (FPS), draw weight, power stroke, overall weight, dimensions — is checked against the manufacturer’s current listing before an article goes live. Specs change between model years, so we re-verify them on every guide update. If a manufacturer lists it differently than a retailer does, we go with the manufacturer.

2. Hands-On Testing — Clearly Labeled

Reviews marked “hands-on tested” were shot, cocked, carried, and handled by our team — David (8 years of deer hunting with crossbows) and Nick Buckman (our beginner’s-perspective tester). We evaluate accuracy at realistic hunting ranges, trigger feel, cocking effort and noise, balance and handling in field positions, and build quality.

Reviews without that label are built from spec analysis plus long-term owner feedback — and the article always says which one it is. We never present a spec-sheet review as a hands-on test.

3. Owner-Feedback Synthesis

A range day can’t reveal what three seasons of use will. So we read hundreds of verified owner reviews and hunting-forum reports to catch long-term issues — string and cable wear, trigger creep, scope quality, warranty service experiences — and fold them into our verdicts.

4. Scoring — What Actually Matters

We score crossbows on: accuracy, build quality, safety features, ease of use (cocking, loading, decocking), and value for money. Affiliate commission rates are not a scoring factor — they never have been, and brands cannot pay for placement or better scores.

5. Freshness

Crossbow lineups change every year. Our buying guides are re-verified at least once a year — prices, model lineups, and specs are checked on every update, and the “last updated” date on each article is real, not cosmetic.
