About David
David is the founder and editor of ProCrossbow.com. An experienced crossbow hunter with 8 years of deer hunting behind him, he has spent countless mornings in the treestand and countless afternoons at the range, shooting, tuning, and learning what separates a great crossbow from a mediocre one.
David does his testing where it matters: at his private backyard range and a local archery club, shooting at realistic hunting distances of 20, 30, 40, and 50 yards. Every bow he reviews goes through the same routine: accuracy groups measured and averaged with no cherry-picking, chronograph readings against advertised FPS, trigger and handling checks in real field positions, and build and safety evaluation over repeated sessions.
David hunts whitetail deer primarily in hardwood country, oak ridges and creek bottoms where shots run 20 to 40 yards and a quiet, accurate crossbow matters more than raw speed. His firm belief: the best crossbow is the one you can shoot confidently from your own stand. Read our full testing methodology.
It was the second Saturday of November, cold enough that my breath fogged the scope. I had been in the same oak-ridge stand since before first light, watching frost melt off the leaves, when I heard him coming down the trail I had been watching all season: a mature 8-point, heavy-bodied, moving slow and deliberate at 38 yards.
Everything I tell readers about patience got tested in about ninety seconds. He stopped behind a screen of saplings, quartering away, and every instinct said wait. When he finally stepped clear, I settled the crosshair, breathed out, and squeezed. The bolt hit exactly where I had aimed, and he went forty yards and tipped over in sight.
That buck taught me the lesson behind every review I write: the bow did not make that shot, preparation did. Hundreds of practice bolts at 40 yards, knowing my exact limit, and the discipline to pass a bad angle. Speed is exciting, but confidence is what fills tags.
